Right so, here’s a summer win — every kid under 18 gets into OPW heritage sites for free this August. Castles, gardens, monasteries, the lot. No tickets, no drama, just show up with an adult and you’re sorted. It’s part of a new pilot to get young people out exploring the wonderful history this country has to offer.

If you’re wondering — OPW heritage sites are run by the Office of Public Works. Basically, they’re the crowd that look after Ireland’s historic buildings and natural landmarks — from medieval ruins to stately homes and some unreal scenic spots.

There’s over 45 fee-paying sites included. Think Dublin Castle, The Rock of Cashel, Trim Castle, and Glenveagh National Park — a solid mix of ancient, scenic, and straight-up iconic. Or head west to Céide Fields, check out Roscrea Castle, or soak in the views at the Blasket Centre.

The only ones not included are Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne — probably because they’d be booked out by lunchtime.

So if you’re stuck for ideas this August, pack a picnic, grab the young people, and go full tour guide on them. History, fresh air, and no entry fee? Lovely stuff.
