After two decades of waffle, delays, and the odd dodgy map, it looks like Dublin’s MetroLink is finally on the cards. The Government’s splashing €35 billion on a new infrastructure plan, and hidden in the middle of it is the long-promised underground route from Swords to Charlemont with 16 stations.

Don’t dust off the Leap card just yet though. The projected finish line is 2035, so we’ve still got a fair few years of darting between buses and trains like it’s a tactical assault course. Still, this time the cash is apparently locked in. Transport Minister Eamon Ryan swears it’s happening and says it’s “absolutely going ahead.”

The wider plan also covers road upgrades, better rail and bus services, and more greenways for those of us brave enough to cycle. It’s all part of a push to cut emissions and link up the country properly, which is basically code for “the traffic in Dublin is completely avoidable if you just live somewhere else.”

We’ll believe it when we’re underground in Drumcondra, but for now, credit where it’s due — they’re finally coughing up.
