Ryanair, Eir and Sky have officially topped Ireland’s complaint charts — about as surprising as Moncler tracksuits at an MK gig. Between January and June, over 20,000 people contacted the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (that’s the CCPC, basically Ireland’s watchdog for dodgy deals and broken promises). Nearly 5,000 of those complaints were about faulty goods or poor service.
Consumers said they’d spent an average of €6,400 on the problem product or service before realising it was a dud. Cars and houses were the big-ticket disasters, with €18k sunk into vehicles and €13k into home improvements.
Online shopping complaints are climbing too, with 17% linked to businesses outside the EU — where your consumer rights don’t stretch quite as far. The CCPC’s advice? Stick to Ireland or the EU if you don’t want to be left high and dry.
They’re now calling for a national car history portal so buyers can check mileage, accidents, and recalls before handing over the cash. They also want more honesty in the property market — because if you’re dropping your life savings on a house, you should at least know if the walls are about to sprout mushrooms.
