Ryanair is set to shake things up from September by increasing the size of its free cabin bag allowance. At the moment, passengers can only bring a bag measuring 40cm x 20cm x 25cm, weighing up to 10kg. Under new EU rules standardising carry-on sizes across Europe, Ryanair will allow slightly bigger bags at 40cm x 30cm x 20cm — though the 10kg weight limit still applies.

But don’t think the airline has gone soft. Boss Michael O’Leary has announced staff bonuses for catching oversized bags will rise from €1.50 to €2.50 per bag, with the old €80 monthly cap scrapped. Anyone caught out at the gate could face fees of up to €75 to put their bag in the hold.

O’Leary was blunt, saying: “We will notice your rucksack, and you will pay.” With around 200,000 passengers a year stung by gate charges, Ryanair clearly isn’t finished tightening its luggage game.
