There are some words that, if I was Will Smith in Men in Black, I’d gladly zap from people’s memories — gone without a trace. Top of the list? Fakeaway, silly season, and the worst offender of them all… staycation. Honestly, even typing it hurts.

That said, over the years — travelling around this beautiful island — we’ve stayed in more hotels than we’d care to admit. Some were gems, others had beds harder than your dad’s made-up fighting stories after a few pints. But after a bit of digging, we’ve pulled together a list of spots in Ireland that actually deliver for all ages.

So, reluctantly — and deducting at least 50 cool points off myself for this in the process— here are five of the best hotels in Ireland for a staycation this June. Good value, high standard, plenty for the kids, and a few well-earned moments of calm for the adults.

  1. Newpark Hotel – Kilkenny

This place is practically a family theme park. There’s a full-on dinosaur park out the back, an adventure playground, a petting zoo, and rooms big enough for a five-person family meltdown. Adults get spa access and peace. Everyone wins.

From ~€200 per night.

  1. Mount Wolseley – Carlow

A proper all-rounder. Playground with a zipline for the kids, spa and golf course for the adults, and rooms that don’t feel like a Ryanair seat with pillows. Plus, their resort houses are great if you’ve got a crowd.

From ~€160 per night.

  1. Hodson Bay Hotel – Athlone

Right on the shores of Lough Ree, beside waterparks, walks, and enough activities to tire out even the loudest child. There’s a kids’ camp, big family rooms, and a leisure centre that doesn’t smell like chlorine and regret.

From ~€189.95 per night.

4.The Connacht Hotel – Galway

This one’s ideal if you want to base yourself near Galway City. Great pool, solid kids’ club, and family suites with room to breathe. Bonus points for the staff being genuinely sound.

From ~€150 per night.

5.Bloomfield House Hotel – Mullingar

Lovely lakeside spot with a nice mix of outdoorsy activities and indoor comfort. The kids can roam around the playground or join the club, while you take a minute to stare out at Lough Ennell and question your life choices in peace.

From ~€140 per night
